Welcome to the North East Valleys
Melbourne Food & Wine Festival 2012 in the High Country

The High Country's vibrant culinary culture will flourish next March, with a program of 18 events celebrating the region's bountiful food and wine as part of the 20th Melbourne Food and Wine Festival (2 - 21 March 2012), on sale from 2 December.
Over three key weekends, food and wine lovers are invited to experience the culinary adventure, warm hospitality and local insights that go hand-in-hand with the region's food and wine and the characters who craft it. Held from the Alpine Valleys to Milawa and the King Valley to Beechworth and Rutherglen, events range from hands-on cooking classes to special alfresco lunches and dinners, from a horse-riding and gourmet adventure to intimate food and wine tours combined with luxury accommodation.
Long, leisurely lunches showcasing seasonal and regional produce herald the start of the Festival on Friday 2 March, with the Regional World's Longest Lunch - High Country celebrating five wine regions and their chefs at Pizzini Wines.

High Country Espresso Trail

Beechworth's Provender, one of the best coffee stops in the North East Valleys
Not content with having top gourmet producers, hatted restaurants and internationally recognised winemakers, Victoria's High Country, now claims to be 'coffee capital', with its new 'Espresso Trail'. Bean 'geek's should hit the Yarra Valley- High Country culinary touring route to King Valley and make the first stop the Mountain View Hotel. Enjoy a morning coffee and chat with Carlo Pizzini about his coffee sourced from 'Padre', a Brunswick coffee house.
Next stop Milawa Cheese Factory for a Gravity coffee and choice of artisan cheeses, breads, and pastries. It's a difficult choice in Beechworth with 21 cafes, but a 'must try' is St Ali's 'chompy' blend at Larder Fromagerie & Provisions, made from the highest quality Arabica beans, lightly roasted in small batches.
For coffee with a view, stop just before Bright at Boynton's Feathertop Winery, for a special blend of Witham coffee made from hand-picked, high quality green beans.
Leave the mountains and head to the mighty Murray for Rutherglen's, Pickled Sisters Café. Strong fully bodied coffee with nice malty notes, packs a punch with melt in your mouth Scottish shortbread, by Glaswegian chef Stewart Gilchrist, baked to his mum's recipe.

BRIDGE ROAD BREWERS
Interview with Ben Kraus
While gourmands will be familiar with the many wine tasting options available through Victoria's North East, not many realise a similarly enjoyable experience extends to beer.
'We're just like a wine cellar door, except with beer,' confirms brewer and owner Ben Kraus from Bridge Road Brewers, with an open invitation for people to drop in and sample their handcrafted ales in the timber-clad brewery.
