THE PICKLED SISTERS CAFE

Marion Hansford

The best thing you'll ever find in a tin shed, The Pickled Sisters Café is one of those delightful surprises that makes the hunt up the highway worth your while.

Capitalising on the stunning surrounds of Cofield's winery, this unpretentious eatery - described as "quirky" in the words of its proprietor - serves up restaurant-quality food in a café setting. A quick scan down the menu reveals such mouth-waterers as gingerbread-crumbed confit of duck leg and roast saddle of Riverina lamb.

When asked why the relocation from the big smoke to Rutherglen, Marion Hansford says it was the space, the climate and the genuineness of the people - and the wine, of course. Originally from Melbourne, Marion worked at Stephanie Alexander's acclaimed Richmond Hill Café & Larder, while her husband, Stewart Gilchrist, hailed from bonnie Scotland.

'Coming up to the North East reminded Stewart of the regional emphasis on produce that you'd find in the country areas of Scotland,' explains Marion. 'We source our produce directly from the growers, and the quality is second to none.'

Drawing from the influence of his homeland, Stewart has concocted a seasonally inspired menu in keeping with the delicious fare of the North East. As important as the mains and entrees are his desserts. A self-confessed sweet tooth, Stewart prepares the likes of dark chocolate tart, honey panna cotta and, his personal favourite, puddings (both for winter and summer).

'We've got a really extensive range of jams and preserves that we make on premises,' says Marion. The Pickled Sisters Cafe prepares all the terrines, chutneys, patés and sauces on-site for use on their menu, as well as in take-home packaging. But there's more to their name - 'It's also a bit of a play on getting pickled at a winery,' Marion laughs.
