Long, leisurely lunches showcasing seasonal and regional produce herald the start of the Festival on Friday 2 March, with the Regional World's Longest Lunch - High Country celebrating five wine regions and their chefs at Pizzini Wines.

High Country Espresso Trail

Beechworth's Provender, one of the best coffee stops in the North East Valleys

Not content with having top gourmet producers, hatted restaurants and internationally recognised winemakers, Victoria's High Country, now claims to be 'coffee capital', with its new 'Espresso Trail'. Bean 'geek's should hit the Yarra Valley- High Country culinary touring route to King Valley and make the first stop the Mountain View Hotel. Enjoy a morning coffee and chat with Carlo Pizzini about his coffee sourced from 'Padre', a Brunswick coffee house.

Next stop Milawa Cheese Factory for a Gravity coffee and choice of artisan cheeses, breads, and pastries.  It's a difficult choice in Beechworth with 21 cafes, but a 'must try' is St Ali's 'chompy' blend at Larder Fromagerie & Provisions, made from the highest quality Arabica beans, lightly roasted in small batches.

For coffee with a view, stop just before Bright at Boynton's Feathertop Winery, for a special blend of Witham coffee made from hand-picked, high quality green beans.

Leave the mountains and head to the mighty Murray for Rutherglen's, Pickled Sisters Café. Strong fully bodied coffee with nice malty notes, packs a punch with melt in your mouth Scottish shortbread, by Glaswegian chef Stewart Gilchrist, baked to his mum's recipe.

Top Beechworth Coffee Stops

Top Beechworth coffee hotspots

Today, if you stand in the centre of Beechworth at the GPO roundabout and walk 150metres in any direction, there are 21 choices of great coffee to be enjoyed.

Beechworth:

Larder Fromagerie & Provisions

The Larder in Beechworth uses St. Ali coffee and is highly recommended by the locals. St. Ali is a specialty coffee roasters based in South Melbourne.  Their coffee is really about quality. It's the quality of the seed used, the unique soil conditions and climate. Akin to terroir, St Ali sources their beans from areas with the right growing conditions and farming techniques, to ensure exceptionally high quality coffee.

At Larder they use the Chompy blend. The blend is comprised of the highest quality Arabica beans, lightly roasted in small batches. It is created with Sumatran (Blue Batak Estate), Brazilian (Delarisse & Ipanema Estates) and Columbian (Curazao Estate) beans. It's big bodied with bold chocolatey notes with low acidity and a dark chocolate finish.

"Gina owner of the Larder says..... St Ali coffee is a blend of the highest quality Arabica beans, not bitter just smooth and delicious, every time. Our signature cake is delicious Castagnaccio. A traditional northern Italian cake made from chestnut flour, raisins, pine nuts and rosemary and a great combination with coffee."

The Beechworth Provender

A top coffee spot in Beechworth is The Provender.

They use " Grata Espresso" roasted by Custom Coffees in Bendigo -Provincial Victorias first coffee roaster.
Beechworth Provender's  "Divina" is a BIG Coffee. It has strong, resonant aromatics, and satisfying depth from a high roast style. The Arabica beans including Niguaraguan, Costa Rican, and Ugandan, give it a rich full body, and a velvety smooth texture. It has exceptional sweetness which compliments the winey chocolate characters nicely, as well as a hint of vanilla up front and a touch of smoke and spice in the nose.
Beechworth Provender's Divina makes an awesome, syrupy short black, a perfectly balanced long black with soft floral overtones, or a deep and well rounded milk based coffee brewed to perfection in a Veneziano machine adjusted perfectly for the task.

Organic sourdough muffins (warmed on a winters day), panforte, figs  in dark chocolate, catanies or flourless chocolate cake make perfect accompaniments to this cup of coffee.

GIgi's of Beechworth

At Gigis they roast their our own coffee from a blend of 5 different types of arabica to achieve a more chocolate and sweet flavour, after roasting their coffee they then let it age for a minimum of 4 days so as to release the essential oils, in roasting their own coffee you maintain the peak flavour that you miss out on with a lot of major brands. In the morning their home made Muffins are quite popular with a coffee.

Wardens Food & Wine

The Genovese Super Brazil blend combines the best of these characteristics to make an espresso coffee that resembles the Italian Style of the early 1950s.

In all, Super Brazil is a blend that makes a great coffee regardless of the style.

It is a blend of coffee that combines high quality, carefully selected beans from up to 14 different origins. These origins are some of the finest growing regions of the world, including Brazil, Colombia, Costa-Rica, Guatemala, Peru, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Kenya, New Guinea, India, and Indonesia.

They have taken these qualities and adapted them to the Local Aussie taste of a more creamier smooth tasting coffee.

Bridge Road Brewery

Ben Kraus from the Bridge Road Brewery also has a great local cup of coffee. They use Zo'i coffee roasted locally in Albury.

Zo'i Espresso is a boutique roasting house and espresso bar,  roasting a variety of coffee blends and single origin coffees. Included in this range are coffees from the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Timor and Ethiopia,  these are both Fairtrade and organic.
Rob Hiles the owner of Zo'i Espresso believes the reason their coffee is a local talking point is because  they roast regularly using high quality beans, this ensures their coffee is always fresh and produces a quality product in the cup.  Also their team of Baristas have all been trained to the Australian Espresso standard, ensuring consistent coffees regardless of who serves our customers.
